Yeah the 1000D isn’t be best build Canon SLR, but it has been built down to a price, and the Nikon isn’t exactly the best built either.

The D60 is an old camera now, and doesn’t have stuff like Live-View that the 1000D offers, or the Tutorial mode the Nikon D3000 has.

In terms of image quality, when used with a good lens, and the right technique they should produce images just as good as each other.

I think Canon have better usablity overall, including the selection of modern lenses, which is reflected by Canon’s 23 year run or EF lenses already equalling Nikons 51 year run of F-mount lenses. That said, Nikon still have one of the best compliments of lenses on the market today.

I don’t think highly of entry level SLRs, they lack the functions a photographer would like…so if money allows, Nikon D90 is much much better than the D60, D3000, and Canon Rebel series.

In a line D90>>D3000>1000D>D60

I had picked D60 over 1000d a year back.
