I would recommend a Cannon PowerShot SX20 IS.
It has 12 MP, 20X Zoom,Face Detection, HD Movie with Stereo recording, Hot Shoe Adapter, Image Stabilization and so much more! It is a Point and Shoot, but you can add lenses. Here is the link http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19208

Yes, they use the same type of lenses (AF or AF-S).

If you’re looking for something versatile, I would suggest the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.
But if you’re just getting into photography and want something cheap that will still get the job done, I would recommend getting the kit lens (the camera + 18-55mm lens).

if you like your auto-focus, you’ll be restricted to Nikon’s AF-S line of lenses since neither of those cameras have built-in AF motors to focus your lenses, so you’ll need to buy a lens with built-in motor, which in Nikon-speak means AF-S only…

Yes, they both use the same lenses.

The D5000 can be bought with kit lenses. It’s cheaper to buy them together. It can be bought with an 18-55mm and/or 55-200mm. These are good basic lenses. My D90 came with an 18-105mm lens that has served me well, but if I had it to do over again, I’d get the aforementioned pair.
