Nikon D60 and D80 cameras

I want to know which of these two ONLY is better in image quality, sharpness, (better performance and quality) in low light. The D60 is more recent than D80 so i don’t know whether it’s better. Can you please compare these two with each other and tell me what is bad and good in them? Is there a lot of difference in the colour and quality of the photos? I know that these two cameras are excellent but which do you think is better?

They are very similar in terms of image quality. But if you’re interested in low light, you might want the D80 simply because you can use lenses like the 50mm f1.8 or the 85mm f1.8

These lenses work very well for low light situations because of their aperture. They will auto focus on the D80 but not on the D60. The D60 has limited lens compatibility in terms of auto focus. You won’t need to kick the ISO as high with the D80 is you use those lenses.

Is there a way that i can get an old AF lens to AF on my Nikon D60 that only auto focuses with AF-S lenses?

The lenses that are AF are from and old Nikon N8008 and I know that my D60 wil work with AF-S lenses so is there a way to get an AF lens to work?

Nope, but you can let the camera verify focus for you if you don’t trust your own eye:

"If the lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 of faster, the viewfinder focus indicator can be used to confirm whether the portion of the subject in the selected focus area is in focus. After positioning the subject in the active focus area, press the shutter release button halfway and rotate the lens focusing ring until the in-focus indicator is displayed."

AF-I lenses will also auto-focus on your camera. If you are willing to use your camera like so many hundreds of thousands of photographers did over the past decades, manually, you will have access to many more excellent lenses

Here is a link to the lenses made by Nikon and which features will work on your D60

Can I use Nikon AF lenses with a Nikon D40 or Nikon D60?

I am looking into buying a DSLR. Can I use my dad’s Nikon AF lenses that he uses with his film camera with a Nikon DSLR? Thanks in advance!

Yes, but you will need to focus them manually. They will not autofocus on a D40, D40x or D60.

You will need a camera with an AF motor built-in to autofocus AF lenses. Consider the D80 which can be had for discounted prices these days or the new D90.

Are lenses for Nikon D60 compatible with the new D5000 ?

My step dad is thinking of buying the new D5000, and giving me his D60. He said he’d do it if we could share the lenses, so is it possible ?

Short answer: Yes

There is no such thing as a D60 lens or a D5000 lens. All modern Nikon SLRs use the same basic lens mount. In fact this mount has been used, with only a few modifications over the decades, on Nikons since 1959. Meaning that you can even use lenses made 50 years ago on a D60/D5000 (with some limitations).

How to use Nikon D60 to take some nice portrait?

How to adjust Nikon D60 Camera to take some nice portrait. the result I want is to blur the background and focus on the object

I am assuming that you currently own the kit lens that came with your camera. Here is how you blur the background of your portrait shots, step by step:
1. Set your mode dial to "A"
2. Zoom your lens to maximum telephoto (which in your case is probably 55mm)
3. Set the aperture the lowest value (5.6 with the kit lens)
4. Keep your subject relatively close to fill the frame, and the background as far as possible, and shoot!

The kit lens you probably have currently isn’t really the best lens in the world to get you beautiful defocused background, because it’s max aperture is only f/5.6. Ideally, you want a lens with the low aperture value. If you have money to burn, get the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AFS, which would be able to give you excellent defocused backgrounds. Alternatively, you can opt for the (much) cheaper Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF, however, this lens will not be able to autofocus on your D60.

Question about nikon d60 camera?

How many images can it hold? Or, how does that work out? Do you have to buy a separate memory card?

and is this a d60? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Nikon+-+10.2-Megapixel+Digital+SLR+Camera+-+Black/9456803.p?id=1218107268800&skuId=9456803&st=nikon%20d60

it says 10.2 megapixel, but does that mean its a d60??

Thank you very much!

How many images it holds depends on the image resolution you’re using, and the memory card you use. And yes, you’ll have to buy a separate memory card (in this case, an SD or SDHC card).

The link you provided is not the Nikon D60; it’s the Nikon D3000.

10.2 megapixels doesn’t refer to the model. D60 would be the model. Megapixels is just the amount of pixels in the sensor.

Based on your questions I’m not sure you’re actually ready for a DSLR yet.. I would recommend doing some research on DSLRs before purchasing one.
Even though you’re "not there" yet, you’ll need to understand how a camera lens works in order for your pictures to turn out well. Here’s a helpful website that will help you out: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-lenses.htm

Is SanDisk CompactFlash 4GB Extreme III Memory compatible with Nikon D60 DSLR camera?

All entry level DSLR’s use SD or SDHC memory cards.

All the Nikon D1, D2 and D3 series, D100, D200, D300 and D700 DSLR’s as well as some of the older, smaller DSLR’s like the D70 and D70s use CF cards.

On fast cards. Unless you are a "machine gun" shooter AND have a camera that supports UDMA, buying a card faster than 133x is a waste of money. Sure, eventually cameras will be able to support the much higher read/write speeds, but by then, faster cards will cost round 1/4 the cost of them now.

At present you can buy a 4 gb, 133x CF card for under $14. Two years ago they sold for over $60.

Is the Nikon D60 a good camera to "grow" with? ?

I am new to using DSLR digital cameras and I know that there are better dslr’s out there like the canon xsi and the nikon d80, but they both really expensive, I guess i’m just wondering if the nikon d60 will be something that I won’t have to upgrade really soon. I want it to be able to last with me for a long time. Does anyone have any good input on this?

That depends on how involved with photography you become. In any case, it would be a good, smaller and lighter back-up if you do move up later.
I’m very happy with my D40, and http://www.kenrockwell.com/
has a lot to say about it, and other cameras, too.
Actually, Ken Rockwell has a lot to say about a lot of things, but he usually makes sense.
Check out his site, and also look at

Good luck and good shooting.
